The KIDS CARE CLUB ... update:

On Mondays, our members continue to show us how caring and helpful they are!

Our board of hearts, representing random acts of kindness they have done, is quickly filling up! We are hearing more and more creative ways that kids are helping out at home and at school.

Another thing in our club that is quickly filling, is our Pennies for the Humane Society water bottle.  We will continue adding pennies each Monday, until donations stop coming in.  We can’t wait to find out how much money is in there!

In the past few months, we have been busy working on some very special giving projects.  The kids have put in some hard work, to reach out and be kind to others:

Shelterhouse Thunder B
ay:

In January, after learning about all the great things that the Shelterhouse does for those in need in Thunder Bay, we decided to make gifts for their residents and clients.  We donated scarves, lip balm and stationery, all made in our club.

Secret Valentines – Vance Chapman:

For Valentine’s Day, rather than making cards for their friends and family, our members made “Secret Valentines” for kids in their school.

Valentine #1:  They chose a student in their class who they felt needed a smile.  They were told to pick someone who had a hard time making friends.  The Valentines were signed “anonymous” and left on the students’ desks.

Valentine #2:  They made a nice card and left it randomly on a student’s desk in a different class, not knowing who would get the card.

Members also chose to make secret Valentines for the Principal, Vice Principal and Secretary.

Alphabet Bags – Vance Chapman Kindergarten and Special Needs Classrooms
In March, The Kids Care Club started a project to help kids in their school learn their alphabet.  Alphabet Feely Bags are bags of textured letters, which can be used as a learning tool in classrooms.  Rather than just seeing the letters, they are able to feel them.

There were a few steps in this project:
1) Cutting textured letters, using sandpaper or foam:
2) Sewing the bags (Special Thanks to Mrs. T for coming in to help with the sewing machine!)
3) Decorating the bags and adding a tag of suggested uses.
4) Delivering the finished bags to the SK room, and Special Needs room (one set of capital letters, and one set of lower case letters each)

Easter Chick Surprise – Vance Chapman Grade 1’s

As a surprise to Ms. Bizjak’s Grade 1 class, the Kids Care Club made a pom pom chick for each student in the class.  Our room was a mess of yellow fuzz, but we managed to make 18 chicks, and left them on Ms. Bizjak’s desk for her to give out to her class before the Easter weekend.

The Kids Care Club will continue to be caring, helpful and kind at home, in their school and in the community.  Stay tuned for more of the great things they accomplish!!

The Kids Care Club - January 2012

<-- Christmas cards for members of the “Kids Care Club” at Kingsway Park Public School

Christmas door hangers – After making these jingly decorations, we went around the school and secretly hung them on every door.

“You Rock!” – Painted rocks and turned them into fridge magnets to thank those who did something nice for us over the holidays (not including gifts)

Giraffe Heroes – Sticking their necks out for the common good!   Our members researched four young Canadians who have made a difference, and created posters about them to display in our clubroom.

Read about these giraffe heroes who stuck their necks out at a young age:

Pennies for Charity – In January we have started collecting pennies in a large water cooler bottle.  After learning about three important local charities, the group voted to donate all the pennies they can collect during the school year to The Thunder Bay and District Humane Society.

Over 60 Random Acts of Kindness have been reported by our members, recorded on heart shaped paper, and posted in our room!  More are added each week - stay tuned!
